POLITICS: What is the cost of dictatorial internet shutdowns?
The world over, activists seem determined to keep up the fight for democracy and hold human rights violators accountable.
For this piece, I interviewed several activists scattered over Asia and Africa. They all share one aim in common - dictators shouldn’t go away with the crimes they committed despite the internet shutdowns or other forms of censorship.
Internet blackouts - the most acute form of control over information - have become prevalent in many corners of the world despite economic and social costs.
This counters the hypothesis offered by many researchers that the Internet could liberate the masses, simply by giving them a platform to speak on.
